Math in Motion: Origami Across the Curriculum K-8

Math in Motion is an interdisciplinary and manipulative-based approach to teaching mathematics across the curriculum. In this fun-filled, hands-on workshop, participants will learn origami, the Japanese art of paper folding and how to use it in their classrooms to support national standards and curriculum requirements. Many teachers claim they are uncomfortable teaching mathematics and may transfer negative messages that influence students’ attitude towards mathematics. Barbara debunks the negative myths about mathematics that focus on mind-numbing routines and mechanical and technical procedures and demonstrates creative techniques to reach every student. Discover the most current, proven, and practical ideas and strategies for using best practices to teach research - and standards-based math concepts such as number sense, vocabulary, spatial relationships, fractions, geometry, measurement, problem solving, and more… where every child counts! Teachers report, “This is one of the best workshops" they have ever attended. (1 or 2 days)

Participants will learn how to:

  • use research based methods in teaching mathematics
  • connect math manipulatives across the curriculum
  • apply differentiated instruction and multiple intelligences
  • organize the classroom for active participation
  • foster cooperative learning activities
  • enhance skills for at-risk students
  • increase reading and writing skills
  • teach cognitive tasks such as: organizing, sequencing, analytical and critical thinking and problem solving
  • Improve test scores by providing ‘active learning’ techniques to engage every student

*There is a $5.00 material fee per participant, which is optional, but recommended. A resource kit is available in English and Spanish editions.

Developing Literacy Skills with Folded Books K-8

This teacher-friendly workshop encourages an awareness and appreciation of the reading and writing process. Participants will learn how to make one-of-a-kind book constructions that support language arts literacy skills across the curriculum. Discover how to make a variety of books from recycled, budget-friendly materials including easy-to-make storybooks, pop-up information books, poetry folders, plus many other unusual and special books that will promote reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Each session includes step-by-step instructions and helpful tips on lesson planning. A correlation chart shows teachers how the various book projects support important content outcomes from all areas of the curriculum. Folded books nurture students' ideas and imagination and serve to stimulate personal writing. You will be in a hurry to get back to the classroom to try these activities out for yourself!
