PLS Reading Instruction Program

The PLS reading instruction professional development program give educators tools to teach students more effectively without limiting educators to a specific reading curriculum. These courses, which complement any reading text or program, give teachers a broad and deep knowledge base that enables them to make well-informed, research-based decisions about the quality of existing reading material and generic, research-based teaching strategies for classroom implementation. The result is a balanced, integrated approach to reading instruction.

Learning to Read: Beginning Reading Instruction™

This course is targeted primarily for pre K-3 educators. However, secondary educators find the course very helpful in working with students who have difficulties decoding text. It includes seminars on a balanced and integrated reading process, phonological awareness, decoding instruction, fluency, comprehension, and assessment and intervention.

Reading to Learn: Comprehension Instruction™

This course is suitable for all educators who are responsible for helping students learn to read and understand written text better. It gives teachers across the curriculum critical, research-based information on increasing reading comprehension levels. It includes seminars on the processes of reading, instruction issues around text, vocabulary, practice, engagement, assessment, and intervention.

Both of the reading instruction courses above use an interactive CD-ROM, which incorporates curriculum resources, teaching strategies, and research studies with Internet links to the research. Additionally, an ongoing reflection journal adds a reflective practice component, which enables educators to validate or change existing reading practices. This CD-ROM "Coach in a Pocket" is updateable as research evolves.

Assessment for Today's Classrooms™

Assessment for Today's Classrooms™ (ATC) addresses assessment fundamentals and literacy, the power of assessment within the instructional improvement processes, the impact of assessment to improve the teaching and learning process, informal and formal assessment, the process of assessing the five reading competencies, planning for instruction based upon assessment data, and organizing the assessment system including the classroom environment and support systems to impact instruction and student achievement. This course is developed directly from the Florida Reading Endorsement assessment competencies.

Differentiated Reading Instruction™

Differentiated Reading Instruction™ (DRI) teaches educators how to maximize reading potential using the practical and accessible tools of differentiated instruction to meet and manage the complex and diverse instruction needs of all students.
